my hands are tired, my heart aches (or maybe the other way around) Link of the day: Laura Hale: Sole proprietor of a unique marketing opportunity, a post by liviapenn about LH's plans to make money off fandom. I particularly like the bit about how she deducts her cell phone and her zines as business expenses. (If you're wondering what's going on and would like to backtrack a little, this post by jacquez has a number of informative links if you scroll down a bit.) Buy Handmade by JJTaylor (Adult) Sometimes a great bandom story will tap into a world you've only seen flashes of, vans and stages and touring and sweat, and you'll love it for fleshing out the life you dream about. Other stories, though, aren't trying for that kind of realism. They take the tiny pieces of life we see and weave them with something bigger, something of their own, and they make it into a story. Fandom: Bandom (MCR) Pairing: Frank/Gerard Length: 18,783 Author on LJ: jjtaylorWhy this must be read: Because I'm reccing you a slow, pretty one this time. In this story, Frank sits in his office cubicle and dreams - not of being a rockstar, but of making something, of being creative, productive, connected. And so, one day, he starts working at a bakery. He meets Bob (do not call him Bob the Baker, he will end you) and Ray, and Mikey the computer whiz, and then he meets Gerard, the artist who loves his bread. Gerard finally notices that Frank has brought a loaf of bread, and he descends on it. "You made this!" he says, slicing into it. "That's fucking awesome." And then he gets this very serious expression on his face and Frank is worried that maybe Gerard is allergic to raisins, or maybe there's a fingertip inside the bread. He stupidly looks down at his hands. Gerard comes over, very close, standing nearly over Frank. "Do I toast it?" Gerard asks with utmost seriousness. From the corner of his eye, Frank sees Mikey cover his eyes and shake his head. Which would be pretty much enough for me to love it, but there's more! Intrigue and suspense and cross-purpose boy-fumbling! Just - read it and let it please you. Buy Handmade by JJTaylor |

The Jared Padalecki Untitled Project by Esohpe (NC-17) Fandom: CW RPS Pairing: Jared Padalecki/Jensen Ackles Author on LJ: esohpeAuthor Website: EsohpeWhy this must be read: A few years after Supernatural ends, Jared is a big movie star and Jensen is a down on his luck actor. When Jensen is offered a role in Jared's new movie, the boys have to overcome their past differences and work together to rebuild their friendship. I love the fact that esohpe has Jared and Jensen on the outs after Supernatural ends. She uses Jensen's anger and his mistrust of his former co-star to explain why Jensen is so bitter of Jared's movie success. And poor Jared, he is just trying to win back Jensen's love and respect and Jensen is not making it easy for him! A great, angsty, well-written read that is satisfying all round. Flew by Ingrid (PG-13) Fandom: Smallville Pairing: Clark/Lex Length: 770 words Author on LJ: ingrid_m Author's website: unknown Why this must be read: I came across this little gem just tonight. I thought it would make a wonderful counterpoint to the longer and more serious fics I have been posting. It is funny (some bits were hysterical) and sweet. It lifted my spirits and made me laugh. Here is a short sample: At least there were no more of those flying six-inch long roaches from hell, so-called palmetto bugs. The first one he saw scared him witless and Superman-Shmooperman, he was going to blast the next one he encountered to a flaming Kingdom Come.
Ingrid's LJ is friend locked and I haven't found a website for her Smallville fics. However, she is posted on SSA. So the following link will take you there. Flew |

Drugs, sex, and rock'n'roll I Wanna Be Sedated, by The Offspring from We're A Happy Family; A Tribute to The Ramones A song that gremlins in my head sing incessantly when I've got a migraine. From the movie 'Across The Universe', we have Joe Cocker singing Come Together, The 2-disc soundtrack. Not from their...drugged days...but...Hmmm, this may be the Beatles singing this. I've got both versions. From the Mediaeval Babes, we have Omnes Gentes Plaudite (The Drinking Song) from Unrentide. I'm not too blasted sure what they're singing, but it's a fun song nonetheless. And why hasn't anyone posted some Led Zepplin? From Led Zeppelin I, we've got Dazed and Confused. Probably one of the songs anyone in my family thinks of when told of this theme. It's amusing to see a six-year-old bop his head along to the song. Now, who's gonna post 'Magic Carpet Ride'? One more question. I've got close to eighty mp3 files that I can't find the blasted record they hail from. Amazon and the like haven't been much help. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Frak it, posting as is until I can figure out what LJ doesn't like.... Fixed! |

Bride of Cthulu by mildredmilton Fandom: DC comics Pairing: Slade Wilson/Dick Grayson (Deathstroke/Nightwing) Length: 6,342-odd Author on LJ: mildredmiltonAuthor Website: her fic on ljWhy this must be read:This has to be read because it is crackfic par excellence. Every fandom has its tentacle porn, right? This is probably the best tentacle porn in the DCU. I suppose it's a little bit crossover, but only a tiny bit, and really, you don't need to know anything about the other fandom other than what's in the fic. Also, anything that shorts. out. the brain of Everyone who read it with its sheer hotness, it's utterly perfect characterization, and the completely fantastically hot porn really seriously has to be read. It is a lot of explicit sex, but it is both of those two men writ fabulously large and fabulously True by someone who understands them to a depth that I pray to one day reach. So, do you want some? what'd you do. Title: Dallas Summary: What'd you do in Dallas? Pairing: Casey/several women. Not at the same time. Rating: 14A Word count: 13K. Notes: I've been writing this for something like four years. Maybe five, or longer. It's my Waterloo. It's unfinished. There are internal inconsistencies and what little logic there is starts unravelling near the end. I'm trying to accept that I might never finish it. I'm still kind of ridiculously proud of it. Tuesday, June 22nd, 2008 We've made some changes to our FAQ, and welcome the community's opinion on these decisions. Specifically: 20. Are there any other guidelines I should know about before submitting a link?Yes. Metafandom is about building community and facilitating conversations. It's not about bullying other fen because they disagree with you. Links to posts that "out" fans or that we feel otherwise act contrary to our goals will be removed. Knowingly editing linked posts, or link bombing metafandom posts to maliciously connect real life and fannish identities will result in banning from Metafandom. Period. Be cool with each other, mmmkay? Further, starting with tomorrow's post, we will change our default settings to screen comments. We hope this will be temporary. Links are still welcome and appreciated, and still can be left as comments to our posts, however we do not want to be used to promote agendas that we feel are contrary to the metafandom ethos.
twtd: Post Int'l Day of Femslash meta - So, the International Day of Femslash was yesterday. I'm betting that most people in fandom didn't know that. -
zillah975: No, seriously. - One of the things I'm really freakin' tired of is this specious idea that there is some universal standard of "CIVILITY" that we ALL JUST KNOW and if we'd ALL JUST ABIDE BY IT everything would be peaches and sunshine. -
villainny: On actor interactions - The key thing, though, is that we must allow the actors to establish their own comfort zones with this. It's awesome to have Joe tease the McSheppers, even if he's not aware exactly that that's what he's doing, but asking David Hewlett to buy into and dir -
telesilla: Sit down, suck it up and STFU - 2. Stop privileging one form of fannish participation above others. Reviews and rec lists are as legitimate a form of fannish activity as making videos or art, or writing.
karjack: Deconstructing Dr. Horrible. - I suspect that, amusing moments aside, what I liked about it is precisely what a lot of the folks (including myself) who didn't like it hated. I think it was fairly biting social commentary, and I wonder how many people even realized they were being bitte -
zvi_likes_tv: How I Want Fandom To Be, by zvi - I believe that defining fandom civility such that it is impossible to offer critical advice ]...] to a stranger also precludes an environment in which fanfiction can be publicly discussed among the readers of it. -
nakeisha: Canon or fanfic - If you had to choose between watching/reading/listening to your main fandom(s) canon or writing fanfic based on it, what you choose? -
queenzulu: Not really the answer to a meme. - What I love about stories is storytelling. And my characters are constantly telling stories: to themselves, to the people around them. -
seekergeek: Thoughts on concrit - Which brings us to the next part. Concrit is difficult to receive. It is easy to get hurt by accident. A person who is hurt may have a hard time getting out of that hurt headspace into one that is willing to listen to a justification of what was said. Or -

Why this must be read: Because it's a perfect bland of violence, suspense, humor and hot, hot sex! It has sexual tension. It has incredibly funny lines. It has clueless!Jim and amnesiac!Blair. It has Rafe walking in on something. It has an actual plot... well, sort of. It is good. Trust me. Target |

Chasing Tyrol, by Lyssie (PG) Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW) Pairing: Gen, multi-character (including Tyrol, Athena, Kara) Length: 3,600 words Author on LJ: lyssie Author Website: Some listed here Why this must be read: This is future spec fic that manages to be mournful, hopeful and humorous, all at the same time. It takes a comical (though frighteningly plausible) premise: They've already agreed that this is Tigh's fault, for getting the Six the rest call Caprica pregnant. The Eights and Sixes know that the Final Five are viable as sperm donors. It's not something that makes either of them comfortable, but they can still joke. Mostly.-and turns into a story of Tyrol's struggle with despair, the Eight-models' search for identity, and everyone's need to reconcile expectations and hopes with their new reality. "All the forgiveness you're going to get" by Cord Smithee Fandom: MAN FROM UNCLE Pairing: Napoleon/Illya Length: 25K Author on LJ: cordwainer_s Author website: All his stuff is archived at CGMWhy this must be read:
Because it's by Cord Smithee... What? You need more...? The challenge was to find some of his work that hasn't already been recced - it's all just so damn good. I'm fairly proud of myself to have found a piece that doesn't seem to have appeared in the van yet - so here it is. It's set at the end of "See Paris and Die". As with all Cord's episode-related work he teases out a strand that screams for a slashy interpretation and builds around it such that the transition between episode and story is seamless. In fact when you've read the story you see in your mind the episode that should have been. Illya's self-recrimination for failing to find the missing diamonds and his exasperation at Napoleon for shopping him to Waverly and then landing him with the babushka are the starting point. What follows is classic Cord. Let me give you a little taster The quality of his writing is stunning. His trademark hot sex (none hotter, IMHO) and emotional intensity are utterly compelling and are what draw me back time and again to his work, whether it's a quick PWP or lengthier novella. It's an immense loss to us all that he no longer writes for the fandom but - yay that he's left a legacy of such steamy wonderfulness. Go and read it now. If you aren't taking a cold shower by the end of it get a friend to check that you still have a pulse...
